About The Faces of Lupus Awareness Project

Lupus is a chronic auto-immune illness that effects many different people around the world.

The definition of Lupus that I have found is as follows; Lupus (also known as SLE, systemic lupus erythematosus) is an autoimmune disease. It takes on several forms and can affect any part of the body, but is most commonly attacks the skin, joints, heart, lungs, blood, kidneys and brain. Autoimmune diseases are characterized by a malfunction of the immune system - one in which the immune system cannot distinguish between the body's own cells and tissues and foreign matter, like viruses. Rather then producing antibodies to attack antigens (viruses, bacteria and similar foreign matter), the immune system creates auto-antibodies that attack the immune system itself.

With so many people affected by this horrible disease themselves, or are watching their loved one's suffering, something needs to be done. More awareness needs to be raised, so that one day, we can hope to find a cure. This is why the "Faces of Lupus" Project has been born. So many people really either 1 - Don't really know what Lupus is as a disease OR 2 - Don't realise just how many people in this world are actually affected by Lupus.

The "Faces of Lupus" Project aims to not only raise awareness of Lupus, but to reflect just how many Faces of Lupus there really are.
